National Poetry Month is coming to a close, and I was invited to Lyrics & Dirges, a monthly reading series hosted and curated by MK Chavez and Sharon Coleman at Pegasus Books in downtown Berkeley on Shattuck. As I become more seasoned in performing my poetry, I’m finding I prefer a specific style called the "poetic mixtape.” Taught to me by the illustrious San José poet, Lorenz Mazon Dumuk, it allows the poet to come up with a particular theme to highlight between the poems in the set and create a bridging statement.
